Granada is music: the city where Manuel de Falla wrote most of his work, where Andrés Segovia acquired his magical touch with the guitar and where the gypsies of the Sacromonte live their inimitable 'zambras' in the caves that look onto the omnipresent Alhambra. This is a vocal feature from the Grammy Award winning album from Ray Charles “Genius Loves Company.” It is a great way to feature a male singer from your community. Before Ray Charles' untimely passing, he called Victor and asked him to do an arrangement of "It Was A Very Good Year". A previous discussion with Ray many years before, revealed that Ray did not want to do any of Mr. Sinatra's material, because as Ray put it "once Frank records a song it really becomes his".
Victor then asked Ray what kind of arrangement he wanted and Ray replied with:
"Well Vic, something that does not sound like the original and perhaps a lot of musical interplay with my phrasing of the tune. Use a lot of woodwinds like on our symphony dates."
(From Victor)
Ray and I took the liberty of changing some of the lyrics in the last verse more in keeping with the kind of life Ray led.
We hope you enjoy this wonderful tone poem. An unedited version may be available upon request.
